CMIF SteerCo Statement on COP28

The Carbon Markets Innovation Forum Steering Committee calls for international cooperation to promote high quality and high integrity carbon markets at COP28. Specifically, we endorse efforts to grow carbon markets, both through the  voluntary carbon markets (VCMs) and through Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to enable Government to Government trades and to increase ambition and support sustainable development. This will accelerate investment in emissions reductions and removals worldwide to reach global net-zero emissions.

We call on policy makers to support well functioning VCMs as they are a key tool in the arsenal of emissions drawdown and a critical part of financing climate action around the world. It’s an urgent priority for nations to seize this opportunity as part of keeping 1.5 alive.

The Carbon Markets Innovation Forum (CMIF) gives startups a seat at the table.

The Carbon Market is a vital part of our transition to Net Zero, and will be powered by innovative startups. We represent the full supply chain of a carbon credit.

We will work with the UK Government to ensure the UK becomes a home for high integrity and high quality carbon credits.

About Us:

The Carbon Markets Innovation Forum (CMIF) was founded in October 2023 to convene startups in the carbon markets and ensure they have a seat at the policy table.

This includes actors in the compliance and voluntary carbon markets, and is aimed at startups involved across the carbon market supply chain:

  • Carbon accounting - supporting the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions

  • Carbon intermediaries - supporting the integrity of the market through software, infrastructure and ratings

  • Carbon credit providers - the folks doing the actual removal and offsetting downstream, and providing carbon credits to the market

We operate an open-doors policy to celebrate, educate and empower startups in the carbon markets, with a specific focus of ensuring they have the chance to feed into the UK Government’s policymaking process.

Once a quarter we invite startups to join our CMIF summit, under the strategic direction of our steering committee and secretariat.

We also aim to equip UK policymakers, regulators and officials with information about and access to the innovative carbon markets.
